Europe and the BeNeLux Union

Independent observations by Aernout Fabius, an EU national resident in the United Kingdom since 1971 and a life-long member of the Christian family, praying for the welfare of a small world in a much larger universe.
BeNeLux History

The BeNeLux is an economic union in Western Europe. Similar to but not the same as the United Kingdom.

The name BeNeLux is formed from joining the first two or three letters of each country's name –  Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg - and was first used to name the customs agreement that initiated the union (signed in 1944 in London). It is now used more generally to refer to the geographic, economic and cultural grouping of the three Sovereign EU member states.

BeNeLux means Business

The BeNeLux Chamber of Commerce (BenCham) is a Benelux non-profit organisation representing the interests of BeNeLux (Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg) companies in China. BenCham strives to strengthen business, government and community ties between BeNeLux organisations and individuals in China. The BeNeLux Chamber of Commerce’s main objective is to facilitate networking between its members, the Benelux Embassies and Chinese interest groups.

BeNeLux Organisations

The BOIP is part of the BeNeLux Organisation for Intellectual Property, established by the BeNeLux Convention on Intellectual Property, which was signed on 25 February 2005 and entered into force on 1 September 2006. The BeNeLux Convention on Intellectual Property replaced the BeNeLux Convention on Trade Marks (1962) and the BeNeLux Convention on Designs (1966).

The BeNeLux Court of Justice (Dutch: BeNeLux Gerechtshof, French: Cour de Justice BeNeLux) is a court, which is common to the BeNeLux Countries Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. The organisation was established by the treaty of 31 March 1965. The court's budget rests with the Benelux Union and is of 9 judges of the supreme courts as well as (since 2017) 6 judges of the courts of appeal of the three countries. The court is mainly tasked with answering requests for preliminary rulings from the supreme courts regarding regulations which are common to the three countries and serves as a civil service tribunal for personnel of the BeNeLux Economic Union and the BeNeLux Organization for Intellectual Property (BOIP), although it may also be tasked with advising the three governments, and with direct judicial tasks following the entry into force in 2016 of a 2012 protocol to the treaty

The BeNeLux Interparliamentary Consultative Council (known informally as the BeNeLux Parliament) is one of the institutions of the BeNeLux economic union. The Parliament was established by an agreement signed by Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg on 5 November 1955, which means it had already existed for three years when the BeNeLux Union was signed on 3 February 1958. The BeNeLux Parliament provides the governments with advice on economic and cross-frontier cooperation. Its recommendations may also concern other matters if common interests or current events so dictate. The parliament also keeps the three governments informed about the opinions that move in the parliamentary assemblies from which its members originate.
