Benelux - United Kingdom

The Benelux Union is a politico-economic union of three neighbouring states in central-western EuropeBelgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. The name—Benelux—is formed from joining the first two or three letters of each country's name—Belgium Netherlands Luxembourg—and was first used to name the customs agreement that initiated the union (signed in 1944). It is now used more generally to refer to the geographic, economic and cultural grouping of the three countries.

More about the BeNeLux and its strtucture

Historically,  the UK is a well established sovereign nation. However, the Scottish Independence Referendum in 2014 is not exactly synonimous of unity! I have lived in Scotland from 1971 to 1975 and if the Scotish National Party succeed I am genuinely concerned that BREXIT leaves the back door open to the disintegration of the United Kingdom.

Europe or BREXIT?

For the uninitiated, the Treaty of Rome, officially the Treaty establishing the European Economic Community (TEEC), is an international agreement that led to the founding of the European Economic Community (EEC) on 1 January 1958. It was signed on 25 March 1957 by BelgiumFranceItalyLuxembourg, the Netherlands and West Germany. The word Economic was deleted from the treaty's name by the Maastricht Treaty in 1992, and the treaty was repackaged as the Treaty on the functioning of the European Union on the entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon in 2009.

In nuce, whether I am for or against is not the issue. I was born in 1955, therefore just before the birth of the EEC and long after the founding of the BeNeLux! In my opinion, the BeNeLux, UK and Europe are constantly evolving; politically, socially and economically. At this stage in history, I would see no point in a division that could only create, or indeed increase, the problems this institution is facing today.
