When Britain finally entered the Common Market in 1973, it was argued by supporters that we were joining an economic organisation without political ambitions. As a 18 year old in 1973 I was maturing and my attitude and philosophy of life has moved with time.
This was, to put it politely, a misunderstanding; and it is why later British governments failed to anticipate the passionate commitment to European unification that allowed the euro to take root despite such obviously flawed economic reasoning. .

In the summer of 1975 I finished my A-Level exams and received my invite to Holyrood Palace, where I (Aernout Fabius) received my Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award from HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.
During the 1975 summer holiday season, I used a Eurail Card facility to travel all around Europe, while I was waiting for my A-Level results. I also workes 6 weeks as an apprentice with Banque Neuflize, Schlumberger Malet in Paris, as a treasury management assistent.
